Composer, teacher, writer, pioneer and one of the greatest pianists in history, **Liszt** was the very embodiment of the Romantic spirit. *’The Elegie No. 1’,* best known in its piano solo version, dates from 1874. As much is confirmed by the comparably enigmatic *’Elegie No. 2’,* which followed in 1877. Less unfamiliar, *’La Lugubre Gondola’* comes to us, as a composition, in two substantially different forms which are normally heard as piano solos.
