Cabbage is another story arising from the decay of a brain that is affected by organic decay. It establishes itself in a place where nothing is quite as it seems because the mind of the author is just not working as well as it once used to. The book begins in quite a happy place. The author is rooting around in the shed at the bottom of his garden rummaging around among the discarded junk and debris of his pathetic existence. He sees an old wooden box that had been left to him by his Father. When he opens it he is quite surprised to see the head of John the Baptist staring back at him. Of course he feels a great need to discover how this particular relic ended up in his shed. Well, we all would feel a bit like that wouldn't we?Luckily he is in a position to conduct an investigation because his soul has already been possessed by a small black and white cat called Little Kit who is something of a detective. AS an ancient spirit Little Kit has lots of transferable skills and one of these is astral travel. So it is quite easy for him to pop back in time and space to see where the head of John the Baptist came from and how it had ended up in among a heap of old rubbish in a shed in Cardiff. It really should be quite a straightforward sort of story but because of the arrival of vascular dementia into the equation things can get a little bit jumbled up. Never mind, Little Kit is quite a determined sort of cat and everything comes to a satisfactory conclusion in the end. Along the way we meet quite a few people played an important part in the development of Western civilisation. They may not be quite as famous as the "A List" of popular history but are at a level that might appear on a TV series called "Obsolete Celebrities" if such a show were ever to be made. As always Little Kit tend to get himself a bit bogged down in obscure matters that interest him. He always gets bothered by "experts" in religion and science who seem to have great knowledge and yet might be barking up the wrong proverbial tree. Speaking of trees, we start off our journey is a place called Socotra, which is a group of four small islands off the coast of Yemen. Here they have a really wonderful range of exotic plants one of which is the dragon-blood tree. It is Little Kits vet favourite tree in the entire world and so he thought that it deserved a starring role in this book. Of course Cabbage is not always easy to read. No book dealing with vascular dementia will ever be that. However it is quite a fast paced romp through the past couple of thousand years and the author hopes that you will find some bits of it as interesting as he has done, At the very end the author is able to bring his investigation to some kind of conclusion. Like most mysteries than answer is there all the time staring you in the face, but we are all blind and stupid. Cabbage is just another book about being human and about human beings..
