Auteur d'une uvre abondante, cet ami de Bakounine et de Kropotkine ecrit a la fois une "Nouvelle Geographie universelle" en dix-neuf tomes (1876-1894) et "L'Evolution, la Revolution et l'Ideal anarchique" (1897). Geographe reconnu de son vivant, ce grand voyageur est aussi un farouche militant libertaire - engagement dont il paiera le prix: exil sous le Second Empire et bagne apres la Commune.
