Compy (Competence) Ames overcomes an isolated childhood, parental and professional prejudice, and her own unruly temper to become a lady surgeon in the 1940s. She loses the man she loves to her glamorous sister, Bonnie. He in his turn loses his most precious possession and it is Bonnie, not Compy, who goads him into regaining his self-respect. A young minister rescues Compy from danger and wants to marry her but she must turn him down. or give up hope of becoming a doctor. Compy has to take orders from a demanding surgical resident she despises (the feeling is mutual) and she tries to bear his unceasing criticism with fortitude. Only time reveals his true character. Compy lives through tragedy, keeps her head in the face of a life-threatening attack, amd ultimately finds happiness.
