Nigel Dearlove is a secure, happy and successful man with terrific homelife, business and such. But one afternoon, driving home from work, a strange force of some kind overpowers him and he drives wildly, recklessly and dangerously along the highway, nearly killing himself. He returns to his life and things are back to normal until he undergoes some kind of strange transformation: regularly proper and careful in ways and habits, he's reminded of things he'd done, wild and highly extravagant things, by friends and acquaintances, none of which he can clearly recall doing. It isn't long before the same strange urge that took over his psyche retakes him, and he is soon acquiring the ways and habits--each and every one--of somebody else, and that very somebody else is an old, old racing-car driver whose old and antique painting hangs up on the very sitting-room wall in the Dearlove household!
