Publisher Marketing: Award-winning visual artist Guadulesa describes the creative process of her Art & Science project Matrix 5, which was funded by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, with support from the National Endowment for the Arts. In search of evidence to prove the power of sound over matter, she studied the five healing tones utilized by her Tsalagi (Cherokee) ancestors in their medicine practices. Guadulesa used the tones as an art medium to create a set of 30 mixed medium paintings and gained empirical knowledge of the tones' effects on the human body. Through the publication of her journal notes with 36 color images, she takes us on a hand-held journey through sound, meditation and art-making. The Boston native now resides in Los Angeles, California, and her works are included in collections throughout the United States, the Caribbean, Mexico, Israel and Spain. Prior to Matrix 5, while living in Boston, Massachusetts in 1989, Guadulesa embarked on a creative project, called Keys of Infinity. She coordinated with like-minded artists who helped to shape an interdisciplinary, improvisational group of musicians, visual artists, dancers and poets. Music had always played a central force in her creative environment, but Guadulesa states that the opportunity to collaborate with other artists and perform as a painter was very exciting. Over the years they performed in such venues as the Knitting Factory and No. Moore Blues Cafe in New York City, the Mobius Space for Experimental Art and several other locations in the Boston area. Performing allowed her to experience the synergy of artists working together in the moment. With Keys of Infinity, Guadulesa began to feel that the sound environment influenced the drying patterns of her paintings. In 1992, she was awarded the Individual Artist Grant for designing a project that combined elements of Art and Science. Guadulesa learned that all form resonates with sound. Ancient cultures lived with that knowledge and made it part of their ritual ceremony for healing and balanced living. The Tsalagi healer utilized a combination of tones which matched the needs of their patients. Five principle tones resonate with particular human organ systems. Medicine chants and instruments can be used to help patients achieve optimum vibrational balance, so that healing can take place. Matrix 5: Tones of Resonance shares details of Guadulesa's experiences and discoveries."
