In a word, White Steppe is quite simply one of the great books of the twentieth century, the century that, through science and technology, was supposed to bring enlightenment and progress but instead brought death and destruction on a scale without precedent. Remember what happened: the enormous combinations of energy and power that came into being with industrialization, the astonishing division of labor which turned millions of men, women, and children into the interchangeable parts of a vast mind-numbing machine. Those not content to leave everything to the unfettered workings of the free market were desperate to find an alternative to a heartless capitalism that made masters of a few and slaves of everyone else. Communism and fascism were the two major alternatives, and with the Russian Revolution of 1917 and the rise of Hitler and the Nazis 1933 to power the stage was set for a war to the death between them.
