It continues the story of Rose Collins, a 12 year old Melungeon girl, who has been orphaned and sent to live with her Aunt Margaret in Virginia. Margaret works for John Keller, the owner of the Keller Estate. The story is set in the early 50s in the segregated South. Rose is confronted with racial bigotry primarily by Carl Cutlipp and his friends.
