Meet Jasper, a teenage San Diegan of Kumeyaay heritage, who learns about his environmental impact the hard way. In order to teach the people a lesson about respect and conservation of the land, Mother Nature has transformed everyone into cacti. After an afternoon of wasting water, Jasper's close friends experience this punishment firsthand. However, Mother Nature's belief in Jasper saves him from this fate and during the night, transforms him into a hummingbird before sending him on his quest to save the environment. The mission involves traveling along the Pacific Flyway, the migration route of the Rufous hummingbird, to find all the pieces of a magical talisman. Along the way, he teams up with Windy, the hummingbird, and Mai, the coyote. At the end of this first volume, Jasper is tested with a riddle from Rigby the Raccoon and after successfully retrieving the talisman, he is sent to Panama to complete the next leg of his mission.
