An orphan and veteran of the Civil War, Ben Poole lives wild and free. When he's not raising hell, he works as a guard for a freight wagon owned by Reed and Tressie Bannon. His freewheeling days come to an end, though, when he discovers an unconscious woman outside his cabin and takes her into town to get help.



Summoned by her parents, Dessa Fallon is on her way to Virginia City where they've found a clue to the whereabouts of her missing brother.
