After shattering the French armies in a lightning blitzkrieg campaign, the Germans turn their attention on Gibraltar as part of their new Mediterranean or strategic policy, a concept based on overrunning Egypt, then moving east and south, capturing the Persian Gulf area, as well as all East Africa in an alliance with France. After moving their forces down through neutral Spain, they soon engage the powerful British fortress guarding the Strait of Gibraltar, long a symbol of British power and dominance.
