Medrig is forced to flee his village after it was invaded and his mother and baby brother were killed. Lost and bewildered, he finally finds the castle where the king is preparing for war. The king's magician Lord Sangred takes pity on Medrig and offers to take him on as his apprentice. Medrig is surprised but soon learns that Lord Sangred is not the old fool he though him to be and the Lord has powerful magic which he shares with Medrig but at great cost to himself. Meanwhile Malken, an evil sorceress, plots the downfall of the realm and does in her power to thwart Medrig and his new found friends as they struggle to make their way in a dangerous and unpredictable world.
