Resurrection (1872) is Machado de Assis's debut novel and is a true rehearsal of his dense psychological characters. It tells the story of Felix, emotionally unstable and jealous, who tries to conquer the beautiful widow Livia. The author's words: "I did not want to make romance of customs, I tried to sketch a situation and the contrast of two characters, with these simple elements I sought the interest of the book". Romance out of the literary standards common to the time and that already reveals the peculiar traits of this author.
