While not a darling of the critics, audiences proved them wrong when they flocked to the musical Adonis making it the longest running Broadway musical of the Gilded Age with over 600 consecutive performances. An early American book musical, the plot parodied the story of "Pygmalion and Galatea" in which the male statue Adonis is brought to life only to find humans disgusting so he decides to return into marble. After a successful run in Chicago, the musical moved to the Bijou Theatre in New York. Following a London production, the musical returned to American for a length tour.
