Rain expects to be tortured and executed when her attempt to assassinate the Imperator ends in failure. Instead, she finds herself a late addition to the Galaxy's largest annual Battle Royale. In 1000:1, a thousand competitors fight it out in a massive arena until the last survivor takes the prize: the entire planet. This year, the number of competitors is swelled to 1001 by Rain's late arrival. She seems to have no chance in the game.
