Olivia Thibodeaux Montgomery has lived with her parents on their sugar plantation, Sweet Rewards, since her husband William's death in the War.

It is 1874 and the State of Louisiana is in political strife between Republican Governor Kellogg, who is striking down the old Black Codes, and the Democrats. In opposition, they have formed The White League to thwart him and his liberal policies.

Determined to find her a husband, Olivia's father Armand Thibodeaux arranges yet another soiree to present Olivia to a suitor of his choice. What he doesn't expect is James Devaroe: a handsome riverboat owner who instantly captures Olivia's attention.
