Heijolle: Soul Freedom

In this second edition of Heijolle: Soul Freedom, Michael Johnson collects over thirty poems about the black experience in America. All topics relevant to the culture are addressed, from love and relationships to politics and identity. The soul is truly and freely expressed in this short work birthed from and dedicated to the black experience.

Michael Johnson was largely influenced by Nikki Giovanni, Countee Cullen, and J. California Cooper, finding in their works a voice much like his own. His poetry is meant to be read aloud to the beat of the internal drum with the rhythm and cadence of an enduring people's memory.
