Sensible and hard-working twenty-one-year-old Edie Larocque is building her life around her boyfriend's future career and her plan of owning a small second-hand furniture shop. Everything changes when she arrives at The White House for a ceremony honoring her war-hero brother. It's there, amid the priceless historic furniture and famous paintings, when she decides she wants more; she wants glamour and riches and she wants them now. Edie abandons her blue-collar Connecticut hometown and her longtime boyfriend to move to an affluent village on the coast for a summer job. While working as an assistant to a prominent antique dealer, Edie meets and falls for a wealthy and charismatic New Yorker, Danny Shapiro. Dazzled by Danny's rich lifestyle, she soon falls into line with a plan for a quick wedding. But on the night of her engagement party, she learns the stark truths about her husband-to-be and comes to understand what money can and cannot buy.
