LEVIATHAN, Written during the chaos of the English Civil War, Thomas Hobbes's Leviathan asks how, in a world of violence and horror, we can avoid falling into anarchy. Hobbes's case for a 'common heritage' under a powerful sovereign, or 'Leviathan', to enforce security and the rule of law, shocked his contemporaries, and his book was publicly burned for sedition at the time of its publication. But his penetrating work on political philosophy, now completely revised and with a new introduction for this edition, raised questions about the nature of government and the society that influenced governments around the world.
