The Presidents Speak

In 1789, after being sworn in as the first president of the United States, George Washington proceeded to the Senate chamber and read a prepared speech to members of Congress and other invited dignitaries. Every newly elected president since that historic moment has followed the tradition. The inaugural address presents an opportunity for the president to unveil a fresh vision for the country. The vision may offer new solutions to pressing problems, a promise to right social ills, hope through trying times or the promise of better days.
