The smell of incense fills the room, as a clay oil lamp known as a diya or a deepak is lit, surrounded by colourful flowers. An ancient, 4000-year-old prayer is chanted, and singing begins, in the local language, singing praises to the Creator. The Satsang has begun. Satsang literally means "truth meeting," and is a North Indian devotional meeting. Its format changes from place to place, and from Guru (teacher) to Guru. But the thing that stays the same: it is a meeting devoted to Truth, to the Divine.
