It's easy to be unaware that intense, personal stories are happening all around us. There are often very intimate, small moments unfolding amidst the trauma of world events. It has always been this way, and it was ever so true of life in the sixties. There were racial tensions on a grand scale, political strife, and a major, divisive war. It sent people into the streets, arguing, rioting and protesting. Yet at the same time people were trying to live their lives as normally as they could. Why Paul is a story inspired by one small moment in a young woman's life, and of a friendship with a stranger a world away. That experience could have faded from memory except for the profound affect it would have on the rest of her life. Her tears were, and are to this day, real.
