This book traces the life of Angela O'Leary, a Filipino woman who is enticed by an American man in the Philippines to come with him to Los Angeles allegedly because he wants to marry her. His real intention is to make her work as a topless dancer. Finding herself in this predicament, she engineers an escape with the help of another man and finds herself on the East Coast. She gets a job as a housemaid of a wealthy New York City couple and the world opens up to her, giving her respectability and a bright future. Along the way she finds romance, pathos and redemption. The four main characters in her life are a female rocker, an insurance agent, a lawyer and the love of her life - a policeman who passes away prematurely in a brawl. The death of her policeman lover, though tragic, ushers in a life of stomach-churning challenges and ends triumphantly as she becomes a registered nurse and a ballroom dancer. It is also the story of a Muslim lawyer who finds himself embroiled in the 9/11 attack on the U. S., of which he has not been a part but is widely suspected of having participated in. The book has international espionage, intrigue, a court trial that ends where none of the protagonists emerge completely victorious.
