The final film from Japan's master film-maker is a poignant story centering on the Japanese academic and author, Hyakken Uchida (Tatsuo Matsumura). A professor of German in pre- WWII Japan, Uchida resigns after thirty years of teaching and looks forward to a life dedicated to writing. When his house is bombed during the war, the professor relocates to a small cottage, having lost most of his possessions.
Uchida is well-loved by his former students, who set about building a new home for their former master, in addition to holding a reunion every year on the professor's birthday.
