Central Rocks: Central Ave Scene 51-58 2 / Various
The second compilation of recordings from the Combo label in Ace's "Central Avenue" series more than lives up to it's title. Here are two dozen cracking uptempo examples of West Coast R&B by some of the best names of the early-mid 50s, almost all of which were produced, in his famous home studio, by the great Jake Porter. Hard to pick a highlight when there are so many, but collectors will be especially delighted with the recently-discovered alternate take of Gene & Eunice's R&B classic 'Ko Ko Mo', not to mention the considerable number of previously unissued performances and songs.
