Martha Argerich
Martha Argerich, described by Gramophone as "unquestionably one of the greatest pianists of all time", celebrates her 80th birthday on June 5th. More than five decades after her triumphant breakthrough at the International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw, her brilliance and flair remain as irresistible as ever.
This legendary all-Chopin recital, recorded in 1965, has been newly remastered for both CD and digital release. Its centrepiece is the Sonata No. 3 in B minor, which is framed by three mazurkas, a nocturne, a scherzo and a polonaise. "Argerich performs with such white-hot intensity that it scarcely feels like a studio recording," wrote BBC Music Magazine. "Her volcanic energy can leave you scrambling to keep up, but the Third Sonata is breathtaking in its spontaneity."
The producer of the Chopin album, Suvi Raj Grubb, declared that: "Argerich was quite the most formidable player we had ever come across ... Nothing would have been beyond this woman."
