'5 by Monk by 5' was deliberately conceived and realised as a quintet album. The 'five' consists of what was Monk's regular working quartet at the time of the 1959 sessions, plus Thad Jones. It is therefore a well-rehearsed unit, complemented by a distinctive additional voice. The album contains two new compositions by Monk and arrangements of three earlier pieces.
