Joe Callicott
Joe Callicott, born in Nesbit, MS, spent his entire life in the area south of Memphis, and his music is part of what can be called Hernando, MS regional style. Other musicians of note from this area were Robert Wilkins, Jim Jackson, Elijah Avery and Frank Stokes. From the early '20s to the '40s, Joe recorded with musical partner Garfield Akers, and in 1930, was invited to record 2 songs, "Fare Thee Well Blues" and "Traveling Mama Blues," both included on this 12 track CD. There was nothing known about Joe until blues researcher George Mitchell found him in Nesbit in 1967 and recorded the solo guitar/vocal tracks heard on this CD. Joe passed away in 1969 after a short-lived comeback.
