Cancionere De La Catedral De Segovia

Discovered in 1922, the Segovia Cathedral Songbook came from the Castilian Court Chapel which, under the reign of Ferdinand of Aragon and Isabelle of Castile, was one of the largest musical organizations in Europe. Both sovereigns employed 34 singers, 50 chaplains (cantors and teachers of music theory), 25 to 40 mozos de capilla (choirboys), and many instrumentalists. The manuscript contains many works for which it is the only source: 97 appear in no other codex of that time. It is also one of the rare Spanish documents having both secular and religious works with lyrics in Castilian, and it is one of the few that contain both Spanish and fashionable European repertoire. Awarded the Prix Goldberg, this program of selections from the cancionero includes several versions of Fortuna disperata, Encina's Ya no quiero tener fe and Todos los bienes, Ghizeghem's de tous bien playne, Isaac's Morte che fay and de tous bien plaine, Obrecht's Omnis spiritus laudet, Tinctoris's de tous bien playne, Torre's Justa fué mi perdición, and more.
