Sonatas for a German Flute

Among them was that of Quantz and Burney so highly regarded Giuseppe Sammartini (1695-1750), who worked in London since 1728 as oboe virtuoso and composer, but at times also played in the opera orchestra Handel. Of his contemporaries Sammartini was touted as the best oboist Europe. There are strong indications that he, as it was then not uncommon at an early age and flute ("German Flute") played and was therefore well equipped to meet the rampant Traversflöte fashion in London of the 1730s. The ensemble Les Buffardins to the transverse flutist Frank Theuns juxtaposes some of his time esteemed Flötensonaten Sammartini such penned Handel, where it has set up following a former practice oboe sonatas for flute.
