Trout Quintet / Arpeggione Sonata
Franz Schubert
The "Trout Quintet" (Forellenquintett) is the popular name for the Piano Quintet in A major, D. 667, by Franz Schubert. Rather than the usual piano quintet lineup of piano and string quartet, the "Trout Quintet" is written for piano, violin, viola, cello and double bass. Recorded in 1950 with Walter Panhofer on piano and Johann Krump on double bass. The "Sonata In A Minor" is the only substantial composition for the 'arpeggione' (which was essentially a bowed guitar) which remains extant today. It's performed and recorded in 1952 by the Vienna Octet members Maurice Gendron on cello and Jean Françaix on the piano.
